Slow when exploring database objects

Hi,
When I click on "Explore Database Objects" it can be many minutes before the list of tables arrives. If I change the database, I have to wait many more minutes again.
I am using Toad 4.5.0.903 (although this is a common problem with all versions I have used). On WinXP.
I don't have that many tables (approx 600) to justify this delay.
Any ideas?
