Version 5 errors with BLOBs

Not sure if anyone else has run into this, but found that using the concat function with a date causes a BLOB to be returned. I verified that this was not an issue with version 4.6 (which I have now reverted to). The BLOB error also appeared on a very simple CASE statement (the THEN was a numeric field, and the ELSE was '' so I wouldn't have expected such a result). Again, reverting to v4.6 solved my problem.
