Connecting to a MySQL database on an AWS instance

This must be easy but for some reason I can't get it to work. I am trying to connect to a MySQL server running on an AWS instance of ubuntu. I checked that the grants for the account specify the machine as '%' and the credentials work from the command line. Port 3306 is open as well. When I try to connect I get an error saying Unable to connect to any of the specified MySQL hosts.
Thanks for any help!

Ignore this. I had not checked the my.cnf and seen that bind-address was set to localhost.
Uff!
