Newbie to MySQL

I came across Toad World via one of the forums and it looks very interesting. I am trying to get my head around what Toad World actually does and if it can assist me.
I have a limited knowledge of PHP & MySQL coding and am trying to teach myself. The project is to create a advanced search function for my site www.tova.co.za. The search function is quite complex (for me) and requires using a number of dropdown lists in a search form that collects the information from various dynamic tables. I have completed keyword search tutorials but can't find much that helps me with using dropdown menulists.
I think the major problems I have is creating mysql queries and the syntax. I am using dreamweaver to help with the syntax but I still don't know how to put it together.
I am interested to find out if Toad can assist me in learning Mysql and if there is tutorial to help me. I have watched a number of videos but I find them to be more generalised and not really a idiots guide to getting started.
