Error message "Unable to connect to any of the specified MySQL hosts"

Hello, I am very new to MySQL and Toad, and I need help with a problem I just encountered. A couple of weeks ago I downloaded MySQL and Toad for MySQL to my computer. During the installation I was asked to download .NET Framework 4.0 (I think I had version 3.5 before) so I did and finally managed to install and start a connection, with locahost. But a few days ago I tried to connect again to localhost and received a message saying "Unable to connect to any of the specified MySQL hosts". Since then, I get this message every time I try to connect. I have no idea what has happened. I changed nothing in the program configuration (connection typeis TCP,username is root, port 3306, all just the same). The only change I made in my computer was allowing Windows Update to install some updates, which included updates to .NET Framework, so I don't know if that might be related. I tried to restore the system to before installing the update but it wouldn't let me. Other information that might be useful: The computer is running with Windows Vista. I have Comodo Firewall, but the problem persists even if I turn the firewall off. I have a Wifi connection which has been quite unstable lately (just in case that might be important). I have tried to reinstall both MySQL and Toad but it still gives me the error message whenever I try to connect. I really don't know what else to try, as I am a newbie. What do you think might be the cause of the problem and how could I solve it? Thank you very much in advance for your help.
