Choosing a connection type

So I love toad and have been using it for awhile. So far I've just always used the SSH connection option and I was wondering if that is the best performance option. I know there are several options such as TCP, or tunnel but I'm not sure if is going to benefit me to spend the time to get those other connections working if the performance is going to be the same? I'm sure they're all just the same way of skinning a cat, I am just curious if one method gets it done faster or more reliably?
