Renaming Columns with Other Column Editing

If I try to edit multiple columns at once while renaming at least one of them, I tend to get SQL errors, so I resort to doing them one at a time.
For example, if I use the alter table dialog to rename an existing column ("age_range" to "age_range_from"), add a new column ("age_range_to"), move the new column up to under the first column, and press OK, I will get a database error that the first column's old name ("age_range") is unknown.
