can't compare schema with remote db; comparison with local dbs ok

Whenever I try to compare schemas with a remote database (shared hosting), I run into the following problem:

SELECT command denied to user <username>@<my cable modem address> for table 'db'
Quest Compare.Schema.MySQL.DBModel

Strangely, the user name includes my cable modem address, while the only user registered with the remote server is <username>@<website address> instead.

So I set the remote server to accept a connection from a remote location (my cable modem address) and it does not change anything.

I can display and update data from all tables. So it's not a connection problem.

The error message says that a command is denied for table 'db'. But there is no such table.

I tried db Solo, another program that compares schemas and generates update scripts. I provide the very same connection info and the program connects to the remote db and works flawlessly. So there appears to be no connection problem.

One discussion thread about a similar problem (I think it was related to a 'proc' file instead of a 'db' file) mentioned a MySQL selection pull-down list. The user wrote that his problem was solved by selecting the right mySQL version. In the options, there is a Database/MySQL section. But it just offers a blank window.

This Toad program is really impressive and I like it a lot. But... if it can't work with a remote db, it's of very limited use. It would be a shame to see the efforts that went into its development being wasted for a measly bug. Or am I missing something??

Hi mmikey, I'm having exactly the same problem with Compare schemas with remote databases.  Have you any update?  I tried dbSolo - thanks for the tip.  That works perfectly for me as well.  I've just started using TOAD for MySQL and this was my first task.

Hi Mary,

As you can see this forum provides very little help. No, there's absolutely no progress on the issue I raised.

This Toad program is very useful locally. Much more convenient for many things than phpmyadmin, even for the things that the latter does too. So I do use it. But when it comes to remote databases, it's a miserable failure. If only it gave some clue as to why it fails when comparing schemas. I mean a clue that makes sense instead of that cryptic error message about some inexistant 'db table'.

dbSolo is not perfect and it's less comprehensive than Toad. But... it works with remote databases.

The community here seems to be asleep. Hello?? Any Toad gurus around??

Hi mmikeyy,
Mary here again (different username - don't ask).  It turned out there is a system db on MySQL called db that I didn't have access to (and that I couldn't see).  I got select access and I can use the tool now no problem.  Let me know if you can't sort it and I'll try and get you the command - I got IT to check for the table and give me access.
